Ongoing deforestation concerns pose risk to Brazilian cattle hide, leather markets

Brazil
The Floresta 250 report released by non-profit environmental organization Global Canopy on Wednesday December 11 reveals that major companies and financial institutions are failing to adequately address deforestation tied to Brazil’s cattle supply chains, which are among the largest global contributors to environmental degradation.

Brazil is responsible for nearly 60% of global pasture-driven deforestation, having lost vegetation equivalent to the size of France, Italy and the UK over the past 40 years as pasture areas expanded by 80%.

The report notes that 83% of assessed companies and 80% of financial institutions lack deforestation policies for cattle-related products. Among those with commitments, few have implemented systems to verify or trace products as deforestation-free. Additionally, no financial institutions and only a handful of companies address critical human rights issues within their supply chains.
