US hides market slows ahead of holidays; lower bids, declining dairy cow hide prices

By the end of the week ended Friday December 20, several sellers in the US hides market reported a decent volume of bids coming in. But most interest was centered around lower-to-flat price levels compared with the last-traded prices.

Cow hides had strong interest overall, except for dairy cow hides, which had the least demand. This lack of interest pushed prices for northern and southwestern dairy cow hides down by $0.50 per piece.

Several steer hides traded at levels slightly lower than the prior day’s reported prices, but they remained close to prices at the beginning of the week.

Looking ahead, most market participants anticipate a quiet period over the weekend and next week as the Christmas holiday approaches, slowing activity across the board.
