Limited hide bidding interest; some Chinese tanners engage for discounts

Several hide sellers noted limited bidding interest on Thursday January 30, except for one packer who received strong volume bids from Chinese upholstery and shoe tanners despite the ongoing Lunar New Year celebrations. Upholstery tanners showed interest in cow hides at prices close to previous trades, while shoe tanners placed significantly lower bids, seeking deep discounts.

US export hide sales decreased by 40.53% to 480,165 pieces in the week to January 23 from 807,434 pieces the week prior, while shipments increased by 16.47% to 552,838 pieces from 474,655 pieces.

Total export sales for the 2025 marketing year were 1,993,837 pieces on January 23, almost all cured hides.

The average year-to-date weekly trend for federally inspected slaughter was 518,426 pieces. Export sales averaged 498,459 pieces, and export shipments averaged 400,636 pieces.
