Part of the appeal of the hemp industry is the uncharted landscape that serves as a siren song to entrepreneurial adventurers.  An historical perspective is a useful exercise, providing some context for the emergence of a new major commodity crop.  This does not happen frequently; many researchers will not see this happen again during the course of their career.   

Hemp is a compelling crop to researchers for reasons different than for entrepreneurs, who are eager to innovate and monetize hemp derivatives.   The potential for discovery is limitless for researchers and spans multiple sectors.  Funding will not be difficult for projects that have broad impact, like the one
