NY Governor Vetoes Hempseed Bill

NY Governor Vetoes Hempseed Bill

New York legislation to allow hempseed derivatives in feeds for a limited group of species failed to clear the governor’s desk this week.  Gov. Kathy Hochul vetoed the bill that would allow for hempseed products to be included in feeds for pets, horses, and camelids, which includes llamas and alpacas.

No commercial species were included in the scope of this legislation, showing the sponsor’s awareness of the controversy around hempseed in animal feeds.  Nonetheless, the limited bill failed to pass, with Hochul highlighting the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had not cleared hempseed for inclusion in animal feeds.
