Asian holidays, leather fairs lead to quiet day of hide trading on September 19

Several market participants reported minimal hide trading on Thursday September 19, but a few packers saw more demand and trading from their buyers than others. According to market participants, the slower trading week was reasonably due to dull overall demand for leather, as observed at the Lineapelle Leather Fair and the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrated in Eastern and Southeastern Asian holidays.

A few packers reported sideways prices for hides traded on Thursday but indicated an increase from last reported levels from other sellers of the traded material. Regular-weight heavy native steer and butt branded steer hides traded up by $1 per piece from the last reported level, and branded steer hides traded up by $0.50 per piece from the last reported level. The hides were traded flat to the packers’ last sales.
