Organic and Non-GMO Corn Chip Sales Accelerate Higher

Organic corn prices remain subdued, hovering near the $8.0/$8.25 level in the mid-west and closer to $10.60 in South Central PA. All eyes are on this year’s harvest.  Food grade organic corn prices remain at a premium and could see continued upward price pressures given the increase in demand. The Jacobsen forecasts that both non-GMO organic corn chip sales will continue to accelerate after experiencing double-digit sales increase 2-years in a row. This is the largest market for organic food-grade corn sales.

US corn ship sales rose approximately 2% year over year according to The Jacobsen insight, during the 2018/2019 season. The total US corn chip market is approximately 1-billion in sales, with a very small portion made up of organic and non-GMO sales. Non-GMO corn chip sales according to The Jacobsen, increased to approximately 9-million in the 2018/2019 season up approximately 26%. Organic corn chip sales in the United States rose to approximately 5-million during the 2018/2019 season, up approximately 36% year over year. The rise in sales in the organic and non-GMO corn chip space is a likely driver of food-grade corn. The food-grade organic corn market is smaller, and most contracts are differed and locked in.
