Animal Feed Debate Shows Need for Empirical Approach to Policymaking

We’ve reported on the unique regulatory status of hempseed and derivatives in the Hemp Bulletin for over two years now, reporting hempseed prices since July of 2019.  Hempseed and derivatives pose no threat of contamination from cannabinoids, but a key regulating body has assumed an entrenched position on safety that leaves little room for compromise. 

Our commentary has also noted the unique pressures in the marketplace today with historically high feed commodities like corn, soybeans, and other minor oilseeds like canola or sunflower, creating optimal conditions for state level authorization of hempseed for use in livestock feeds. 

A gray market already exists, where some producers are well-positioned to take advantage of a niche resource like hempseed meal in their farm’s feeding program.  Certified organic livestock producers will benefit even more than conventional in current market conditions.
