Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
U.S. biodiesel imports slowed during October, pulling back from September’s multi-year high of 55.4 million gallons. Despite the pull-back, October imports were the highest recorded since 2016. Export activity improved, rising 10 percent from September and remaining on pace to exceed the record-setting export volume of 2022.
Imports through October have reached 419 million gallons, surpassing full-year 2022 by 77 percent. There were 50 million gallons imported during October, 10 percent below September but 165 percent above the 19 million gallons received during October 2022. Additionally, imports were 180 percent above the five-year October average of 18 million gallons.
