US hide market wraps up active week amid expectations of Lunar New Year slowdown

The week to Friday January 17 in the US hide market started with slow trading, but it closed on a more active note, driven by buyer interest from Mexico and China. Packers remained relatively quiet, while traders accounted for most of the trades during the week.

Prices for most steer materials fluctuated by $1 per piece throughout the week. Cow material traded at steady prices, though one seller noted limited sales due to buyers pushing for lower prices. This seller opted to hold off on sales, as there was no immediate need to move inventory.

Heavy native steer hides experienced little movement this week. Some sellers attempted to push prices higher, citing tighter supply, but buyers resisted the increases. Sellers plan to revisit these negotiations next week.
